K.R. Bharat has had a distinguished career in finance, marked by significant achievements and leadership roles across prominent institutions.
Career Highlights:
- Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB) (1997 – December 2002):
- Managing Director: Bharat was instrumental in establishing and growing CSFB’s equities business in India. Under his leadership, revenues from equities increased from $8 million in 1998 to $32 million in 2000. By then, CSFB had become a market leader with a 13.6% market share.
- Investment Banking: In 2000, he also took charge of the investment banking division. Notable successes include securing and executing the VSNL privatization mandate from the Indian government.
- Other Achievements: Bharat led the team that structured India’s first offshore equities derivative trade and established CSFB as a dominant player in the participatory notes business. His ability to motivate and manage a high-performing team was a key factor in these accomplishments.
- Peregrine (1993 – February 1997):
- Deputy Managing Director: Bharat started and built Peregrine’s equities business from scratch, growing it into the #2 equities firm in India before moving to CSFB.
- Citibank (1983 – 1993):
- Various Roles: Bharat began his career here, ascending to Vice President and a member of the management committee. His roles included bonds trading, FX chief dealer, India country risk manager, and head of investment banking for India.
- Achievements: Bharat pioneered trading in UTI units, executed India’s first GDR transaction (Grasim), and elevated Citibank to the top 5 in Indian merchant banking league tables.
Current Endeavors:
- Advent Advisory Services India Pvt Ltd: As Managing Director, Bharat and his team have established a strong reputation for value investing, focusing on undervalued mid-cap companies. Their investment performance over the past three years has outpaced most other investors in the country.
- Advent Capital Advisors Pvt Ltd: The firm specializes in private equity and M&A activities.
- Advent Brand House and Advent Sports: Bharat’s latest ventures include marketing and distribution of premium international alcohol brands through Advent Brand House, and managing sports events, properties, and sportspersons through Advent Sports.
- Infrastructure: The group is exploring opportunities in coal washing as part of its infrastructure initiatives.
